Despite the underperformance of the Indian mining industry during the last couple of years, the long-term potential of the sector remains intact. Industry experts estimate the sector's revenue to increase to over $35 billion in the next two to three years. To realise this investment, it will be crucial to focus on achieving economies of scale, strengthening perational management, and deploying advanced technology solutions. Globally, the use of advanced technology solutions has helped achieve greater efficiencies in terms of increased production, better resource management and enhanced safety.

The Indian government has also begun to lay greater emphasis on improving mining practices through the use of technology. The New Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulation) Bill, 2011 calls for the deployment of advanced techniques in areas of exploration, drilling, excavation, loading, beneficiation, etc. Moreover, there is growing interest in foreign players to collaborate with domestic companies to transfer technology solutions, and promote innovative practices.

Going forward, the use of technology is also expected to increase with the evolving scope of mine development operator (MDO) contracts. These contracts bring in greater planning and operational expertise, thereby promoting the use of advanced equipment and technology solutions.

Even with these positive developments, there is a significant technology gap in the Indian mining sector as compared to global standards, both in terms of availability and usage. High tax rates and poor equipment financing support are the major challenges. Inadequate after-sales services and an underdeveloped market for used equipment are other areas of concern.

The mission of this conference is to highlight the state of mining practices in India. The conference will focus on the current status of technology deployment in the mining sector and recent global advances in technology, and explore solutions that are best suited for India. The conference will also highlight the role of MDOs in improving mining practices in India.
